How an EV charger installation works

No jargon and no surprises: here is what happens from the first message to the moment your car starts charging.

  • OZEV approved installer
  • NAPIT registered
  • Trading since 2013
  • Based in Hexham
  1. Tell us about your property

Use the quote form or call. We gather as many details as we can up front: photos of your fuse board, electricity meter and where you park, the rough distance from the fuse board to the parking spot, your car and whether you have solar panels. The more we know at this stage, the smoother the rest of the job goes.

  2. Survey

We normally carry out a survey within a few days of your enquiry. We check the incoming supply and main fuse, the condition and spare capacity of your consumer unit, your earthing arrangement and the best cable route. Rural properties often need a closer look, for example where the charger is going on an outbuilding or the supply is overhead.

If the board needs replacing first, we can do that as part of the same job. See consumer unit upgrades.

  3. A free, tailored quote

Every job is different, so we don't publish typical prices. Your quote is free and based on your details and the survey. It sets out the charger, the cable run, any extra work (such as a consumer unit upgrade or an earth rod) and the grant, if you qualify.

  4. Grant application (if eligible)

If you qualify for a grant, where possible we apply for it before installation. We'll explain what evidence you need and, as an OZEV approved installer, handle the grant paperwork for you. See grants.

  5. Installation day

We fit a dedicated circuit, mount the charger, run and protect the cable, and deal with earthing. Your power is normally off for less than one hour, and we'll let you know when before we switch off.

  6. Testing, set-up and paperwork

The circuit is tested and certified, the charger is commissioned and connected to its app, and we show you how to schedule charging. We notify the appropriate DNO (distribution network operator, e.g. Northern Powergrid locally) through the ENA (Energy Networks Association) connections portal.

Chargers we install

We fit chargers from these manufacturers and will recommend one based on your car, your tariff, whether you have (or plan) solar panels, and how far the charger will be from your consumer unit.

Things that can add to a job (we'll always tell you before we start): an older consumer unit without space or suitable protection, a low-rated main fuse, very long cable runs, walls that need core-drilling, trenching to a detached garage, or a supply upgrade from the DNO (Northern Powergrid locally).
