EV charger & electrical questions, answered

The questions we get asked most, in plain English.

How much does an EV charger installation cost?

Every job is different. The price depends on the charger you choose, the distance from your consumer unit to where you park, the cable route, your earthing and whether your consumer unit needs upgrading. That's why we don't publish set prices. Quotes are free and tailored to your property once we have your details and, where needed, have carried out a survey.

How quickly can you survey my property?

We gather as many details as possible up front, such as photos of your fuse board, meter and parking spot and a rough cable distance. We then normally carry out a survey within a few days.

How long will my power be off on installation day?

Normally less than one hour. We'll let you know before we switch off.

Which EV chargers do you install?

We fit Ohme, myenergi zappi (including the zappi GLO), EVEC and Sync Energy (formerly BG SyncEV) chargers. We'll recommend one to suit your car, your tariff, any solar panels and where you park.

Are you an OZEV approved installer?

Yes. We're OZEV approved, so we can apply for the government EV chargepoint grants for eligible customers, such as renters, flat owners, landlords and businesses.

Can I get a grant, and when is it applied for?

If you rent your home, or own and live in a flat with private off-street parking, you may be eligible. Landlords and businesses have their own schemes. Homeowners living in a house are not eligible for the home grants. Where possible, we apply for the grant before installation, and if you don't qualify we'll tell you at the start. See our grants page for details and GOV.UK links.

Will my fuse board need upgrading before a charger is fitted?

Not always. Some older consumer units have no spare way or no suitable protection for a new EV circuit, and then an upgrade is needed. We check this at the survey and include it in your quote, and we can do both jobs together.

My parking space is a long way from the house. Can you still fit a charger?

Usually, yes. Long cable runs to detached garages, barns, outbuildings and farm parking are common in rural Northumberland. The cable has to be sized and protected for the distance and the route planned carefully, and we cover all of that in the survey and quote.

Do I need off-street parking for a home charger?

For a standard home charger, yes. The cable must not trail across a public pavement. If you only have on-street parking, ask us about the options.

Can my charger use power from my solar panels?

Yes, with the right charger. The myenergi zappi, for example, is designed to charge from surplus solar. Tell us about your system and we'll suggest suitable options.

Do you need to tell the electricity network about my charger?

Yes. We notify the appropriate DNO (distribution network operator, e.g. Northern Powergrid locally) through the ENA (Energy Networks Association) connections portal. If your supply needs upgrading first, we'll explain the process.

Do you do general electrical work as well as EV chargers?

Yes. We're a full electrical contractor, covering fault finding, consumer unit upgrades, sockets, lighting and outdoor power, EICRs and full or partial rewires.

Which areas do you cover?

We're based in Hexham and cover the Tyne Valley, including Corbridge, Prudhoe, Haltwhistle and Allendale, as well as Ponteland, Morpeth, Alnwick and the wider Northumberland area. We also cover parts of Tyne and Wear.
